Mexico. During the first quarter of 2025, Mexico registered one of the largest increases in digital fraud in Latin America, according to information from Sumsub, a global identity verification and compliance platform. The nation's fraud rate increased by 27.06% compared to the same period last year, surpassing regional (+6.49%) and global (+6.31%) averages.
One of the most significant discoveries is the 1200% growth in the use of fictitious identity documents in Mexico, compared to the global increase of 195%. This type of scam is based on the mixture of true and misleading information to generate totally new identities.
Unlike the 64% regional reduction in document forgery, Mexico experienced a 25% increase in this type of fraud compared to 2024.
The implementation of deepfakes was the first to appear in the index of fraud attempts in Latin America and Mexico, with an incidence of 0.02% and 0.03%, respectively. Globally, this practice saw a 700% increase compared to the previous year.
"The increase in fraud in Mexico represents an alert for entities and institutions." We are seeing a rapid increase in the use of fake identities and advanced frauds such as deepfakes. At Sumsub, we are committed to providing advanced verification tools to fight these rising threats," said Daniel Mazzucchelli, Sumsub's director of expansion in Latin America.
