International. Akamai Technologies announced a strategic alliance with Zuplo to transform the way AccuWeather launched and monetized its application programming interfaces (APIs). The collaboration streamlined workflows, improved developer experience, and expanded revenue opportunities from the use of critical weather data.
The initiative combined Akamai's global Edge platform with Zuplo's API gateway, making it easier for AccuWeather to centrally manage its APIs, strengthen security and authentication mechanisms, and deliver faster, more reliable data on a global scale. Thanks to this architecture, the company was able to reduce latency and improve the availability of essential information for real-time decision-making.
Akamai and Zuplo developed a modern API platform that increased the scalability and performance of the service. Akamai's distributed infrastructure at the edge brought critical data closer to end users, while Zuplo's capabilities provided intuitive tools for API management, access control, and monetization, enabling secure and immediate delivery of information.
"By combining the best resources from Zuplo and Akamai, we were able to share weather data with unmatched speed and reliability," said Chris Patti, Director of Data and Science at AccuWeather. The partnership transformed the development experience and facilitated more efficient monetization of APIs, while ensuring timely access to key information for the protection of lives and property.
As part of this process, AccuWeather unified its API traffic management on a single platform, strengthening security, simplifying access management, and enabling new business models. This integration allowed the company to focus on its core mission of supporting people and businesses in the face of adverse weather conditions.
At Akamai, Eric Graham, Vice President of Product Management Application Security, highlighted that the collaboration with Zuplo enabled customers like AccuWeather to accelerate the commercialization of their APIs, increase their profitability, and deliver secure experiences at the edge. In this sense, he highlighted that the project evidenced the benefits of integrating Akamai's distributed network and API security capabilities with the Zuplo gateway.
Additionally, both companies redesigned the AccuWeather developer portal, simplifying the registration, authentication, and payment processes. This new environment made it easier to access APIs and provided a unified interface for analytics, access control, and revenue monitoring, improving both business management and the developer experience.
Josh Twist, co-founder and CEO of Zuplo, said that the AccuWeather API is among the most widely used globally and that the collaboration with Akamai enabled it to deliver the edge performance and scalability needed to support high-volume distributed workloads, consolidating a value proposition geared towards growth and security.
