International.Genetec Inc. announced that the Port of Barcelona has implemented the Genetec™ Security Center platform as part of a technological modernization process that seeks to improve the security and operational efficiency of this port infrastructure.
The port of Barcelona, seen as one of the main logistics hubs in the Mediterranean and the leading port on the peninsula in terms of global traffic, has experienced a constant increase in recent years, which has generated new demands in terms of safety and operation. Within this framework, the Port Authority began a process of change with the aim of strengthening a more unified and technologically modern environment.
Until recently, the port had a security system that imposed technical limitations on incorporating emerging technologies and linking solutions from different producers. This complicated the real-time decision-making process, a crucial element in the management of a large port.
Following a public bidding process, GenetecTM Security Center was chosen because of its ability to merge video surveillance, access management, intrusion identification, and other applications into a single system. "Security Center's ability to integrate devices from different manufacturers and its modular design guarantees us a long-term solution that evolves according to our needs," explained Dídac Höflich, ICT Infrastructure Project Manager at the Port of Barcelona.
The process began with a pilot migration using virtual servers. The transition of the entire CCTV infrastructure was then completed, increasing from 180 cameras to 530 active devices, with the projection of exceeding 800 units. In addition, new functionalities such as intercoms, advanced video analysis, forensic inspection, fire detection, access control and real-time occupancy analysis were integrated.
The adoption of this technological solution has allowed the management of all systems from a single tool, which has optimized the operation and reduced incident response times. There have also been reductions in operating and maintenance costs.
During high-attendance events such as the Copa América or Nadal al Port, the platform has facilitated the control of flows of people and vehicles. "The centralization of systems has dramatically reduced incident response times, while proactive monitoring has improved security throughout the port. We now have full control of the system with a minimum margin of error," Höflich explained.
