07/05/2011. The perception of security in Mexico increased in April, compared to the previous month, and compared to the level reached in the same month of 2010.
The results, in charge of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and in line with the National Subsystem of Information on Government, Public Security and Delivery of Justice, show that the Index of Perception on Public Security (IPSP) stood at 95.5 points, a figure higher by 1.6% than in April 2010, when it had been 94 points and higher by 1.9%, compared to March this year.
The indicator shows that in April, the population in the country alleviated the fears of insecurity compared to the expectations it had been observing throughout 2010.
It is the first time, since the calculations began, April 2009, where the annual percentage of the IPSP is positive.
The information indicates that the progress measured at the annual rate presented by the indicator in the reference month was due to increases in three of the five partial components that make it up.
Among which stands out the one that identifies the confidence of the citizen when walking alone (a) along the course where he lives between four and seven in the afternoon, which had an annual increase of 11.6%.
The partial reached its highest levels at the beginning of the year, in percentage terms, since the IPSP measurement began in April 2009, although in March it experienced a stumble.
With respect to the indicators that evaluate the current personal security with which it was presented a year ago and the expectations within 12 months, mixed results were reported.
In the first case, the indicator on the perception of current personal security compared to that of 12 months ago stood at 93.2 points, a figure 2.4 percent lower than that reported in the same month of 2010.
This indicator shows the greatest affectations, since it refers that the perception of security of the citizen with respect to the one he had 12 months ago is not satisfactory, even the inidicator was in negative territory since April 2010.
The partial that compares the situation of personal security expected within 12 months, with respect to the current one increased 1.6% at an annual rate.
However, the sub-index that measures the perception of security in the country compared to what it was 12 months ago, reported an annual fall of 3.6%, a figure that accentuates the perception of the citizen that security conditions have deteriorated in relation to what it had 12 months ago.
The Survey on the Perception of Public Safety is conducted during the first 20 days of each month.
