"Citizen participation on the Internet will allow public policies to be shaped. However, this channel also allows the official to defend and convince the population about the importance of the decisions taken," added the former trans-Andean president in the framework of the International Forum PoliTICS 2.0 that was held yesterday at the Borges Cultural Center. "In this context, the leadership of the public official is to see what could be good for the next generation, without political parties involved. That's the biggest challenge," Lagos said.
"As well as sociological studies, surveys and marketing, technology is one more tool, and its use in the political field will be of utmost importance in the future," Lagos said without hesitation. However, he clarified that the success of its application among citizens is reflected when the debate exceeds the limit of the virtual world to the real world, in reference to the latest events in the Arab world.
"As an experience, Chile went from having an informational government to a transactional one, which allowed the vast majority of citizens' procedures with the State to be carried out electronically," Lagos said. In his opinion, this was a decision that forced the private sector to follow the same path that the government had started and accelerate the process.
For Lagos, one of the biggest concerns raised by this panorama is the organization of public voices on the network. "There must be a mechanism to process all the information," he said.
