Brazil. The São Paulo-based AC Camargo Cancer Center reported that its collaboration with Axis Communications has resulted in savings of more than $2 million during the first two years of commissioning its innovative video surveillance system. These resources will be reinvested in patient care services.
The institution has deployed more than 2,000 video surveillance cameras throughout its facilities, including corridors, complex care units and parking lots, with the aim of strengthening the safety of patients and employees, and optimizing the quality of service.
"About 15,000 people pass through our entrances every day, and the care of those patients extends far beyond operating rooms or patient rooms," said William de Souza, the center's corporate manager. "By implementing new and advanced video surveillance devices, we are enabling our security teams to maintain 24-hour surveillance and our personal physician to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. With cameras monitoring all areas, including cafeterias and parking lots, we're always looking for potential warning signs, even after patients have been discharged. If something seems wrong, we can alert our team that additional medical attention may be necessary."
Axis-installed devices are equipped with video analytics designed to detect incidents, protect assets, and ensure safe care conditions, without compromising the privacy of patients, family members, or medical staff. Among the benefits identified, the center highlights:
Operational efficiency: The cameras detect technical failures such as power outages, water leaks, problems in medical equipment or refrigerators for medicines, as well as nitrogen leaks, allowing immediate alerts to be triggered.
Parking management: The system allows the recognition of license plates of authorized vehicles, improving the flow of more than 300,000 cars per year in the facilities.
Safety in critical areas: Permanent monitoring in surgical centers and highly complex laboratories allows for improved patient safety and compliance with privacy regulations.
Emergency Prevention: Cameras are configured to identify falls, atypical behaviors, and potential dangerous circumstances for vulnerable individuals.
Carlos Machado, director of essential operations for end customers at Axis Communications Brazil, said: "The launch of Axis solutions at the AC Camargo Cancer Center emphasizes what can be achieved when innovation merges with a strong commitment to care." By integrating enhanced video surveillance cameras with analytics, the Center has made security a central pillar of its operations, allowing staff to focus entirely on what matters most: the health and comfort of their patients. In doing so, the hospital's leadership has set a compelling example for other institutions facing similar challenges."
The center began the implementation with 300 cameras, but after observing significant improvements, it expanded the system to a total of 2,100 devices distributed in seven buildings. Both AC Camargo and Axis Communications confirmed that they will continue to develop new solutions to support the continuous improvement of cancer care and institutional efficiency.
