International. Axis is the first company to launch a network security appliance with an integrated element and validated as set out in the latest generation FIPS 140-3 Level 3 standard.
This way, Axis customers in government and critical infrastructure can be confident that their devices meet the security levels defined by the U.S. National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) and required by law.
FIPS 140-3 certification evaluates four levels of security. At Level 3, hardware is expected to prevent tampering and access is expected to be identity-based. The embedded discrete secure element, EdgeLock SE052F, is from NXP Semiconductors, a global leader in secure connectivity solutions for embedded applications and known for its trusted security solutions, including the protection of today's smartphones, bank cards, and passports.
Axis said it will continue to expand its range of FIPS 140-3 certified devices by incorporating the new secure element into all of its upcoming network products. FIPS 140-3 compliance will be available for use cases ranging from surveillance to business optimization (through analytics), access control, and audio. Even organizations that are not required to comply with high FIPS standards will benefit, as they will also have the assurance that their systems are interoperable and that they meet long-term security requirements.
Continued investment in a product portfolio with industry-standard cryptographic computing modules is part of a multi-layered strategy by Axis. Secure storage and computation of cryptographic keys is just one component of the hardware-based cybersecurity platform Axis Edge Vault. Axis Edge Vault also includes features such as secure boot and IEEE 802.1AR-compliant Axis device ID that verifies the identity and authenticity of Axis devices.
