Colombia. The Ministry of Interior reported that it will allocate more than US $100 million to the acquisition of video surveillance equipment, intended to strengthen the authorities' reaction capacity.
This government measure occurs in response to the increase in crime, as well as the perception of insecurity among citizens.
“Cameras that can recognize people facially, that can later be used to present evidence and with Artificial Intelligence that warn what may end up happening,” Luis Fernando Velasco, head of the portfolio, declared to the media.
A recent survey in which the Government participated revealed that 70% of the group surveyed have had problems with their neighbors due to noise, while 44% have had problems due to fights and 40% due to drugs, garbage or pets.
Meanwhile, 67% think that “there is no fear of being punished for violating coexistence issues,” which contrasts with the fact that 75% perceive a permanent presence of the National Police in their neighborhood.
“As we had the study, we focused all the resources of the National Fund for Citizen Security and Coexistence towards these types of programs. We aspire to approve the first major project for security in 20 cities, whose mayors expressed their interest in co-financing,” said Velasco.
