Genetec reveals three success stories within the critical infrastructure sector

Latin America. Three well-known companies in Latin America belonging to the energy, seaports and mining sectors, modernized their security systems with Genetec Security Center to improve their situational perception and optimize their operations.

YPF - Argentina
YPF is one of the most important energy companies in Argentina, specialized in the exploration, production, distribution, refining and commercialization of hydrocarbons, as well as renewable energies. Since its operations cover a full range of activities in this important economic sector, YPF is considered a critical infrastructure company where security is one of the most relevant systems. In relation to their security system, the biggest challenge they had was the management of three different video software platforms in technological obsolescence, systems vulnerable to different cybersecurity risks, intermittent camera failures, video delays and high bandwidth consumption.

This situation led YPF to update its security systems and after an exhaustive analysis, the chosen platform was Genetec Security Center. In relation to video surveillance, Security Center Omnicast™ allowed them to centralize the monitoring of around 3,500 cameras installed in different locations throughout the country. Additionally, they used KiwiVision's™ perimeter intrusion analytics completely unified to the video system and Security Center Autovu, the automatic license plate recognition system (ALPR), for better monitoring of the entry and exit of vehicles arriving at their facilities.

"We needed an agile platform, which would allow us to manage all our cameras and security systems more efficiently. Genetec Security Center helped us achieve this. I believe that the future lies in having a flexible and easy-to-use platform, in which we can merge other systems without major problems, always taking into account the costs. The cost of the platform must be reasonable compared to the benefits we receive. At YPF we achieved all this with Genetec," said Carlos Maroni, YPF's Physical Security Manager.

Since installing the Security Center platform, the YPF team has managed to dramatically reduce the time required to handle incidents and investigations: it went from days to just minutes. Since operators now work more efficiently, YPF has increased site security while reducing operating costs. Currently, 80% of YPF cameras are intended to monitor assets and people. The other 20% of cameras monitor operations and help ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

South Pacific Terminal - Chile
Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS) is the concession that operates the container port in Valparaíso, Chile, 110 kilometers northwest of Santiago, the capital city. This proximity makes it a strategic point in the commercial distribution of the country, since the central zone of Chile concentrates more than 50% of the population and national economic activity.

The administration of Terminal Pacífico Sur had a very ambitious objective: to be a benchmark for the ports of the South American region. For this, TPS needed to implement a robust video surveillance system with the capacity to operate without falls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and that would allow them to secure and monitor the perimeter and security barriers, both by sea and by land.

After evaluating several platforms, they chose Security Center Omnicast™ to ensure perimeter security first. Today they are also using this solution to track loads, rigorously comply with occupational and environmental safety regulations, as well as obtain information and data very valuable for business intelligence.

"Today we have more than 250 cameras with Security Center Omnicast that are monitored by a specialist team. Little by little we have been implementing more business intelligence to make the work easier and that this is mixed with our strategy of cargo safety, port security and also with our goal which is to prevent accidents, "said Camilo Jobet Weisser, deputy commercial manager of TPS.

Vale - Brazil
For Vale, a Brazilian multinational mining company and one of the largest logistics operators in Brazil, security is a fundamental pillar. They have many remote sites throughout Brazil and needed a platform that was open, flexible and allowed them to control all their operations from a monitoring center.

"We evaluate this solution and believe it is the best on the market, intended as a solution that serves our headquarters around the world. I would say that was Genetec's first positive point," said Mirela Siani IT Project Manager, Vale, Brazil.

Vale currently has the Security Center Omnicast video surveillance system to monitor more than 4,000 cameras, Security Center Synergis to control the access of more than 70,000 employees and Security Center Autovu to control vehicle access. Additionally, they are also implementing Plan Manager to be able to locate all the entities such as cameras, doors and plate recognition cameras on a map, and thus be able to respond to incidents in a more efficient way.

Thanks to the unification of its video surveillance, access control and license plate recognition systems, Vale has improved the company's security levels, increased its situational perception and optimized its operations.

"The impact that Genetec's solutions have on Vale is huge, but it's even better to realize that you have an ally on your side. That is priceless, because if we have a problem we know that our ally will be there to help us," Mirela concluded.

Genetec will bring together these companies on December 3 in a panel discussion to talk about Critical Infrastructures that, although with specific conditions and requirements, face the same reality: to be protected from risks and threats, but above all, to have technology that allows them operational intelligence.

Registration here for the live critical infrastructure panel discussion – December 3, 10 am ET with YPF, Vale and CELEC.
