Network resilience, an alternative to increase cybersecurity in companies

Resiliencia de red, alternativa para aumentar la ciberseguridad en las compañíasInternational. A total of 41 billion cyberattack attempts suffered Latin America during 2020, while Colombia reached the figure of 7 billion attacks, as revealed by a report by the consultancy Fortinet.

In the country, according to the Cyber Center of the National Police, last year, cybercriminals increased their activities and managed to commit crimes such as abusive access to the system (5,584) reported cases; interception of computer data (1,231); and website spoofing (4,353), among others.

Given this and as a first step, we must understand what these potential risks are in order to take the necessary actions. A computer crime in a company can occur due to internal leaks. This means that with business policies of computer security it can be prevented since many times employees are blindly trusted and the necessary measures are not taken.

Opengear, a company dedicated to providing network resilience to organizations, indicates that among other frequent attacks on organizations can be found: Phishing; 'malware' aimed at Windows or spoofing of web pages: among the most attacked are Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Google, PayPal and Dropbox, according to the Webroot 2020 report. Similarly, another digital crime that affects companies is the Business email compromise, by which cybercriminals gain access to workers' emails and manage to carry out financial procedures.

To solve this, many companies have been able to elaborate or advise themselves from cybersecurity experts from an approach that covers it directly, but are there other ways? The answer is yes.

Network resilience
Many wonder about this concept and it is important to clarify it: "Network resilience is the ability to resist and recover from a service outage. It is a way of assessing network resilience to measure how long it takes a company to resume normal business operations, after a failure is resolved. There are many considerations in building a resilient network, including backup and recovery strategies, disaster management and redundant elements," said Todd Rychecky, Vice President of Sales for the Americas at Opengear.

To that extent, resilience becomes a strategic ally of cybersecurity, since, if an organization does not have it, that is, it does not have the capacity to react to the interruption of a service, a failure or an incident, it can be more vulnerable to digital attacks, where the more time runs between a fall of the systems, more time could have a cybercriminal to commit the crime.

In a survey of IT leaders, 49% warned that network resilience was their number one priority. The task then is to ensure continuous activity in companies, where cutting-edge technology and various integral solutions have the ability to provide that business continuity through monitoring and proactive repair.

A platform that guarantees network resilience
Based on the presence and proximity of a NetOps or Smart OOB console server in each IT location, Opengear Network Resilience Platform is a solution to centralize the network through Lighthouse management software.

"It has the ability to provide remote and secure access to critical network devices, through a separate administration plane, which allows you to manage and resolve problems in branch offices or peripheral locations, as well as the ability to automate NetOps processes, such as deploying and provisioning equipment securely, without the need to send technical personnel to the site," Rychecky said.

Everything is complemented by Smart Out-of-Band technology, coupled with the use of open architecture NetOps automation tools (Docker support and Python runtime environment), is the best way to secure access console ports while creating a solid management plane.
