About 2,761 security cameras would have Medellín at the end of 2019

Colombia. The Mayor's Office of Medellín, through the Ministry of Security, estimates that by 2019 they will go from having 2,080 security cameras (data as of December 2018) to having 2,761 installed in total linked to the emergency system 123.

The city currently has different types of cameras in several areas, where PTZ and conventional cameras (range 400 meters), multisensor cameras with 360-degree coverage and facial recognition stand out.

At the moment, the Mayor's Office is working for the use of 300 cameras with LPR technology (for vehicle reconnaissance) in 96 strategic locations.

According to data revealed by the newspaper El Colombiano, thanks to this system, until April 28, 394 arrests were achieved: 371 in flagrante delicto, 11 with a court order and 12 minors apprehended, according to data from the Metropolitan Police. In all of 2018, the cameras allowed 176 arrests, including the apprehension of 14 juvenile offenders, 156 cases of flagrante delicto and 6 with a court order.

Now, in the Council of Medellín there is a draft Agreement for the implementation of a system of security cameras with loudspeakers that warn citizens that they are about to commit an infraction, or that warn the Police when a crime is being committed to achieve capture in flagrante delicto. The proposal will still have to pass several approvals for its execution.
