Mexico's 2nd Largest Airport Security Expands with 4th Terminal

Mexico. From security control to perimeter protection: Bosch equips Cancun airport with a video security system.

It is the second busiest airport in Mexico, after Mexico City, but the largest for international passengers: Cancun Airport, located on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, serves a growing number of visitors from around the world to visit Cancun's Mayan heritage or enjoy the beautiful beaches.

The number of passengers has been growing rapidly, from 7 million in 1999 to approximately 23 million annually today. To handle the growing number of passengers, a fourth terminal was put into operation this year, making it the only airport in Mexico with four terminals. With the increase in the number of visitors, the safety and security of passengers has become more demanding and has required a new comprehensive security solution.

That is why the airport operator ASUR decided to redesign the video security to have a system operating in the 4 terminals. Bosch was selected not only to equip the new Terminal 4 with video cameras, but also to integrate the existing video security systems of Terminals 1, 2 and 3 into a comprehensive video surveillance solution that could be centrally managed from a unified platform.

In Terminal 4, almost 600 cameras of different series and types have been installed to cover the specific needs of the different areas both inside and outside the terminal.

The cameras are used for a wide range of applications: inside the building they monitor security and baggage control, waiting areas, offices and the flight tower, as well as convenience stores; outside the terminals they check the perimeter areas of the airport and all access points to the airport, as well as to the airfield and runway.

For reliable and easy management of large volumes of data, the video security solution includes four Bosch Video Recording Managers (VRM). Video recording managers allow cameras to transmit relevant video data directly to available DIVAR IP storage devices without the use of network servers. This saves costs and server maintenance while eliminating a potential single point of failure, increasing reliability. The available storage capacity is used in the most efficient way because VRMs automatically balance the load of video streaming with free storage volumes. Less redundant storage is required and it is easier to respect retention times with minimal risk of overwriting.

Cancun airport uses a central monitoring center, manned by 10 security managers throughout the day. Each security manager has a screen that shows the video captured by up to 25 cameras. To monitor video cameras, security personnel can select camera positions manually, or alarms automatically notify them in case of non-compliance with predefined alarm rules based on video analysis or motion detection of the cameras.
