New development increases security in vehicle access control

Latin America. A smart solution uses cameras with video analytics to prevent human failure and reduce the risk of assaults or unauthorized entry.

The Swedish manufacturer Axis Communications and the company Pegasus developed a license plate reading system that makes the presence of a professional unnecessary to visually verify the entry of vehicles into parking lots.

The PlateView Embedded system with Axis cameras is now available in Argentina, Chile and Colombia, for installations that do not want to depend on the human factor in residential complexes, companies and commerce in general.

When an authorized vehicle approaches, the barrier rises automatically. If the registration is not registered or was blocked (for example, because it belongs to a former resident), access is denied. This management allows security personnel to engage in other tasks.

For an even higher level of security, the system can do double validation: the barrier goes up if, on the one hand, the license plate is authorized, and if the driver also presents his cell phone with a QR code to a reader.  That ensures that not only the vehicle, but also the driver, are authorized.

"This technology can be used as the only means of control, or be integrated into more robust solutions, depending on the level of concern in each environment," says Jimena Genetti, Solutions Manager at Axis Communications.

Those condominiums that wish to maintain their current systems for vehicle access control, whether automated or not, can use this new technology as a reinforcement to their current security. In this way, when the system identifies a vehicle that is not registered or is on the blacklist, it can automatically issue an alert to the doorman, or send an email to the area in charge, while simultaneously preventing access. In case of not being authorized, the doors remain closed.

The solution has a friendly interface, which allows you to add or remove permissions easily. "If a rental contract expires, for example, it is possible to incorporate the license plate number of the vehicle to prevent the access of the former resident, even if the doorman knows it," explains Amaro Monteiro, director of Pegasus Tecnología.

Among its features, the low cost of implementation stands out, since the Axis M1125-E camera performs the processing and storage of the images, without the need to have any type of server.

Another of the multiple uses of this technology is to facilitate the identification of the license plates of vehicles that have been used for the commission of crimes in other stores.

Since criminal gangs usually use the same cars on a recurring basis, the affected commercial establishments can share the license plates of the car and have a base of the potentially dangerous, restricting their entry and alerting the security team or the competent authorities, to anticipate reactively the occurrence of the facts.

The cameras that make up the solution can be purchased through authorized distributors in each country and the software downloaded through the Pegasus Technology website and licensed through an online payment.
