International. Green Bay-Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB), in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, adopted a technology that automatically detects people going the opposite direction on exit corridors or to restricted areas.
When that happens, no matter the time or day of the week, a visual and auditory alert is sent to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents and the airport's Public Safety Communications Center. In the command center, a live image of the event appears immediately, allowing for an advance risk assessment.
Finding ways to quickly neutralize insider threats and ensure security with limited budgets and staff has become a concern for airports. To achieve this advanced management through video analytics, the GRB adopted AgentVi's savVi video analytics platform, which works in conjunction with Axis Communications' high-definition network video cameras and Milestone's video management system. For this, the airport has a selection of 140 fixed, PTZ and thermal cameras from Axis.
"Most of our Axis cameras are fixed and located in particular areas of interest," said Tom Miller, airport director. "Axis PTZ cameras are used to move around wide areas and approach specific places such as the airfield, vehicle access doors among others."
Those advanced technologies allow the airport to detect individuals moving against the flow of people or if someone enters a place without the credentials, which can pose a serious security threat. Thanks to the multiple Axis cameras in the area, security personnel can also check if anyone made contact with someone else in the vicinity.
The airport also uses Axis thermal network cameras over the runways and takeoff to monitor the movement of aircraft, service vehicles and personnel. AgentVi's software analyzes images from Axis thermal cameras to distinguish between people, vehicles and static objects. The system automatically sends an alarm to security personnel when it detects the presence of people in a vehicle-only or restricted area.
Finally, video surveillance has played other critical roles at the airport such as investigating incidents such as slips and falls, allowing authorities to determine the culprit and responsibility of the airport; as well as the detection of fraud in the place of payment of the parking lot.
Green Bay-Austin Straubel Airport serves more than 350,000 shipments annually. The two runways provide 30 daily departures and connections to destinations around the world.
