More than 40% of cybercrimes are carried out by former employees

International. The percentage is larger than those promoted by hackers or by the competition. Administrators point to, as trends in virtual security: digital business protection, Internet of Things, threat intelligence and protection against geopolitical attacks.

Comstor' business unit of Westcon-Comstor and one of the leading cisco technology wholesalers, notes that more than 40% of companies suffered cybercrimes from their former employees.

In the same way that the risks to the cybersecurity of the company increase every day, so does the concern about what should be done to reduce or prevent the spread of virtual attacks. Studies reveal that most companies have no plans or do not consider that their team is capable of responding to complex threats.

If IT security was always an issue that demanded quite a bit of concern, a report from PWC Mexico reveals that the enemy may be closer than you imagine. The study showed that the main sources of incidents and cybercrimes in Mexican companies are, incredible as it may seem, executed by their former employees or even by officials who are still in the company.

According to the study entitled "Cyber Security and Privacy: From the Perception of Reality" it was revealed that about 44% of the risks of attacks on cybersecurity and privacy of organizations are carried out by that internal public. In the sequence of risks, hackers appear among the main sources of incidents, with 34%, competition, with 31% and current officials with 30%.

The data is even more worrying considering that 87% of Mexican companies report having suffered attacks in the last year and that a cyber attack represents a high impact for external organizations, since, according to the PWC Mexico report, the cost reaches US $ 1.5 million, 24% more than that of a cyberattack on companies located in Latin America as a whole.

To get an idea of how these numbers can generate high costs for companies, the case of Sony, specifically the digital content sales platform, the Playstation Network, during 2010, was quite significant. Shares of the system accounted for $36 in January 2010. After the whole data leak case, the stock was at $24.

While around the world most cyber attacks happen through phishing mail, in Mexico virtual crimes are configured as follows: about 43% are received on mobile devices and 40% for phishing.

In this way, specialists in the sector consider that the attention given to external risks must be added and compose the strategies of internal risk companies, mainly due to the weakest link within companies: users. That is because the number of employees connected to various devices has increased considerably in companies, which means a door to relevant threats, since employees, former employees and also external visitors, such as partners and suppliers, are responsible for circumventing the security standards established by the company for their own benefit, which helps to raise the statistics of incidents caused internally.

Cybersecurity Trends
The study also tried to contemplate what companies consider doing to improve security in relation to virtual attacks. Among the solutions presented, in a list of 447 companies that participated in the study, almost 55% said they plan to allocate resources for the open source solution. The same percentage intends to allocate efforts and investments in IoT security and 57% to improve collaboration between business priorities, involving digital strategy and information technology.

Those sectors coincide with the four major areas in which administrators point out as trends in virtual security: digital business protection, Internet of Things, threat intelligence and protection against geopolitical attacks.
