Panama. Five thousand surveillance cameras will be installed throughout Panamanian territory next year, according to plans by the Central American country's Ministry of Public Security revealed today.
The director of Technology and Communications of the Ministry of Public Security (Minseg), Ricardo Díaz, estimated that by mid-2016 the cameras could be working, after the work was tendered.
Díaz said in a public statement that the agency is currently studying an agreement with empresa de Transmisión Eléctrica S.A. (Etesa) in order to use its fiber optic system to connect the cameras between the interior of the country and the command and control center of the system, which will be located at the headquarters of the National Police. in the capital.
The official specified that today they are looking for the information to know the scope of the "intelligent video surveillance cameras" and then determine the details that will be requested in the tender specifications.
Díaz said that in Panama there may be about 10 suppliers that could participate in the tender.
Recently the Minister of Public Security, Rodolfo Aguilera, reported that these cameras will be able to capture the license plates of vehicles in circulation, make facial recognitions (because they recognize up to 60 characteristics of a face), and also detect shots and types of weapons, according to official information.
The minister said then that there are two thousand sites throughout the country chosen by the National Police to locate these cameras.
