El Salvador. The Mayor's Office of Usulután intends to begin developing in the coming weeks the second phase of the video surveillance system plan with 46 security cameras, which would be installed in the commercial area of the city.
Last year as part of a pilot plan, the commune installed six security cameras located in the vicinity of Munguía Park, which according to Mayor Francisco Meardi have given good results.
"We have already received the plans of where the security cameras will be located, so we are in the stage of seeking funding for the project. The cameras that are already installed have helped us to prevent criminal acts and have also served as a strengthening of the investigation of a crime committed," said the government representative, who pointed out that he has already had approaches with the authorities of the Armed Forces and the National Civil Police (PNC) and has announced the new project.
Mario Reyes, in charge of the camera monitoring center, which is installed in the Usuluteca commune, said that on several occasions the police have requested the videos to be able to identify someone who has committed a crime.
Reyes added that the security cameras have a range of up to 200 meters, and that there are currently three people in charge of monitoring every movement that occurs in the surroundings of the Munguía park, personnel that would be increased if the new security equipment is acquired.
He also pointed out that if the 46 new surveillance cameras are installed, the system would also be monitored by the Armed Forces and the PNC with the aim of making the plan more effective.
Inspector Jesús Molina Aguiluz, departmental head of the Police, endorsed the project and pointed out that as an institution they have been in charge of identifying the most vulnerable sectors of the commercial area.
