International. The director general of the National Police, Ignacio Cosidó, said that this security body wants to promote "facial biometrics" as one of the innovative procedures in the control of spanish borders.
According to the Police, Cosidó referred to this issue when inaugurating, in Madrid, the International Conference on Border Protection (Limex'12).
In his speech, the director general highlighted the "firm commitment" of his institution "for technological innovation to improve border control", which includes applying advances "such as facial and fingerprint biometrics or electronic document readers".
In addition, Cosidó explained that the National Police is facing the challenge of guaranteeing the security of the Spanish borders through the "Smart Borders" project and promoting the control of immigration at origin.
Regarding the "Smart Borders" program, the director general explained that this plan aims to "connect all the pre-existing ones such as the Visa Information System, the Automated Border Control System, the Advanced Passenger Information and all the databases in operation."
The purpose of this project is "to facilitate the border crossing for regular travelers, improve the management and flow of travelers and at the same time strengthen controls and the guarantee of security." This "Smart Border" project is part of the modernization and innovation plan called "Police 3.0".
