International. The professors of the Institute for Technological Development and Innovation in Communications (IdeTIC) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Carlos Travieso González and Jesús Alonso Hernández, participate together with the researchers Juan José Fuertes (Polytechnic University of Valencia) and Juan Carlos Briceño Lobo (University of Costa Rica) in the development of a new biometric identification system based on the characteristics of the hand.
According to the university institution, in this work the researchers develop a novel system, very simple and robust, of biometric verification through the use of the texture of the palm of the hand.
First, the image of the palm of the hand is extracted from the total image, with invariance to scale (rotation), and then a method based on the spatial derivative is applied to extract the texture characteristics in the images of the palm of the hand.
the development of this innovative system has been picked up by the Carnahan Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) under the title 'Intramodal biometric identification systems based on the characteristics of the hand'.
For its part, this work presents a novelty from the scientific point of view, since the way of extracting the information from the hand is innovative, which, added to the good results achieved, scientists believe that a prototype can be obtained with possibilities of application in real practice.
From the business point of view, this research opens the door to new products in the field of biometrics applied to security.
