Colombia. The Metro Company, responsible for the most important public transport system in the city of Medellín, is carrying out a project that seeks to install security cameras in each of the 126 cars that make up this system. It is expected that by 2013 this project will be completed in which about US$3.4 million will be invested in a period of two years.
The previous year the Medellín Metro decided to expand the number of cameras in the interests and platforms of the entire system, currently has 599 cameras. 42 of the 126 cars already have CCTV.
According to the Metro Company, the goal is to allow the driver to visualize in real time what is happening in the cars. This "in order to inform the central control post of any anomaly and to be able to intervene and activate the security care protocols in a very short time and guarantee the tranquility and safety of the users when they travel in the metro".
The cameras have high levels of technology that allow special recordings to be made and installed in places with different environmental conditions.
