Macy's Inc. announced that its Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores are adopting RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to manage merchandise inventories at the item level and control the replenishment of available merchandise.
The company has been testing RFID technology for nearly two years at some of Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores, as well as distribution centers, to control the replenishment of available merchandise by size, color and style.
The initial launch of RFID technology will be in the replenishment categories strongly linked to sizes, such as men's apparel, underwear, men's pants, jeans and women's shoes, in all stores in the country. Also included in the macy's and Bloomingdale's private label initiative are.
By 2012, the company expects to begin using RFID technology in all of its stores nationwide to count replacement merchandise, items that are regularly in inventory and automatically refilled as they are sold.
Macy's Managing Director Tom Cole praised the technology, stating that the implementation of RFID will create a win-win situation for its customers, suppliers and the company, as accurate inventory counting will increase sales and decrease stockout situations.
