20-minute access to the cablegate has been provided by the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten (both belonging to the multimedia group Schibsted). Thanks to a "leak of the leak" – in the words of its director, Hilde Haugsgierd – the Nordic newspaper managed to get hold of a material that, until now, Wikileaks had only shared with five media: The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, Der Spiegel and El País.
Much has been said about the Wikileaks cables, but what has come to light since November 28 has been a tiny part of those more than 250,000 documents. On its website, Wikileaks has published only 3,871 cables or telegrams, 1.54% of the total (this page 'hangs' the cables after the media to which they were distributed have investigated and published them).
This pace of publication seems not to be to the liking of the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, who has recently announced that to speed it up he will share the secret documents with other newspapers around the world, large and small, and with human rights organizations.
Meanwhile, Aftenpostenhas decided to establish a collaboration with other media, including 20 minutes, and facilitate their access to the cables. Some, such as the German Die Welto, the Swedish Svenska Dagbladet – in addition to Aftenposten itself – have already begun to publish information extracted from the documents.
