Computer wars are no longer a simple fantasy of science fiction stories, as revealed by the director of the British state spy agency, Iain Lobban, who said that several countries are already using cyberwarfare techniques to attack each other. For that reason, they must be permanently alert to protect their IT infrastructure.
According to the official, the systems of the English Government are the target of approximately one thousand monthly attempts of online attacks. "Cyberspace is in struggle every day, every hour, every minute, every second," he told a conference.
According to the newspaper El Mundo, Lobban said that the Internet opened the doors to espionage, putting at risk infrastructures such as power plants or financial services. "The threat is real and credible," he said.
On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, the United States is preparing a Cyber Command to defend its networks and prepare offensives against possible attacks. In December 2009, President Barack Obama named Howard Schmidt, a former head of security at Microsoft, eBay who also worked in the Air Force and the FBI, as a "cybersheriff."
