Airport security: modern and efficient

Mexico.   In our country, the airport industry represents a sector  of great impact at an economic level: both for its geographical position in commercial issues  and  the tourism that is developed in Mexico, since they are two agents that have potentiated and demand higher quality in airport infrastructure.

The most important airport in our country is Mexico City, which connects our country by air with the world and concentrates the highest percentages of passenger transfer and international commercial movements; followed also by 3 other important airports in our country: Cancun, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Despite the fact that for years ago the AICM was declared saturated, the area demand grew by 6.4% between 2009 and 2015 for commercial transport and the flow of passengers increased 8% on average between 2009 and 2016, opening the possibility of innovating Mexico's airport infrastructure, building a much larger airport with an international terminal designed to receive up to 68 million passengers a year in 2020.

Investing in airport infrastructure brings great financial benefits to Mexico: it streamlines the economy, attracts more tourism, diversifies markets and attracts more investment.

Regardless of the construction and design challenges facing this already standing project, what are the agents that must be considered to achieve this level of safety and that all gears walk correctly? It will turn out to be a challenge when we look at security issues:

According to data from the PFP and Aeromexico, at the Mexico City airport, the frequency of crimes is grouped as follows: weapons (0.8%), smuggling (0.4%), foreign exchange (0.4%), drugs (3.1%), human trafficking (0.8%), theft (1.9%), baggage violation (90%), other crimes (2.3%).

Security requirements at airports have increased in recent years and the main concern is access control and individual identity checks at each of the checkpoints, explains César Figueroa, Sales Manager Physical Access Systems at dormakaba.  Even so, passengers and visitors expect these procedures to be quick and easy, which is why it is of high importance for airports to offer the best experience for passengers.

Dormakaba's experience in providing access control solutions to airports is very broad, the solutions are developed especially taking into account the requirements of airlines and airport operators such as: greater security and protection, efficient flow of people and optimized administration.

Among the solutions that dormakaba implements and recommends for airports include perimeter protection, access of staff personnel (including time and attendance control), air/ground side access, self-service systems for boarding (including applications to take advantage of mobile devices), self-service border control systems, among others.

Air/ground side access solutions: Among the most delicate aspects of airport security is the segregation of the public area (mainland) and the security area (air side). Passengers must leave the plane and cross quickly and easily upon arrival at their destination, passing from  the air side to the land side without crossing paths with passengers.

Safety regulations stipulate that no unauthorized person can gain access to the air part, which means that no return of arriving passengers should be allowed, nor access to unauthorized personnel. Dormakaba's one-way aisles provide a smooth exit for arriving passengers without allowing others, or anyone else, to return to the safety zone.

Self-service systems for boarding: Passenger flow can be improved by automating boarding pass control, as passengers enter the exit area and move towards security. Dormakaba boarding control equipment helps airport staff control passenger boarding passes more efficiently. In turn, this reduces queues at the entrance of the exit corridor, eliminating congestion and making it easier for airport security units to have better control.

Dormakaba is a pioneer in providing fast boarding gates around the world. With a large number of doors installed worldwide, the company has gained unprecedented experience in working together with other partners, such as airlines, airport operators, architects and installers; successfully implementing solutions in Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, among others.
