Zipstream reduces bandwidth need by 50%

Latin America. Axis Communications developed a video compression technology called Zipstream, which allows customers to use less bandwidth and less storage space without investing in new cameras or software.

Designed specifically for video surveillance applications, Axis technology reduces bandwidth and storage requirements by an average of 50% or more, and is fully compatible with the H.264 compression standard.

The technology adds a new module in the IP camera's video compression mechanism, ensuring that important image details are prioritized in the video stream, while unnecessary data is compressed. If before it was possible to store HDTV quality recordings on memory cards inside the cameras themselves for 5 days, it is now possible to extend the period to more than 10 days of continuous recording with the same quality.

"We know that one of the challenges for the popularization of video surveillance systems in Full HD or 4K is the availability of band for data traffic. Files must be stored in storages with greater capacity, and this increases the costs of the project. With Zipstream technology, these requirements are drastically reduced," says Sergio Fukushima, technical manager at Axis Communications.

The technology analyzes and optimizes the camera's video stream in real time. Scenes with important forensic details, such as faces and license plates, are isolated and preserved, while other less critical areas, such as white walls and trees, are filtered out.

Customers can use the Zipstream in conjunction with other Axis network camera technologies, such as Wide Dynamic Range (WDR)-Forensic Capture and Lightfinder. As it is fully compatible with the H.264 standard, the Zipstream can be used with AXIS Camera Station, AXIS Camera Companion and other video management software already in use.
