Colombia. Axis Communications expands its activities beyond the electronic security market, with the launch in South America of AXIS A1001, an IP door controller. It is the first access controller in the world based on an open, non-proprietary network protocol. The product launch represents Axis' most significant step in serving new markets since it created the IP camera in 1996.
"Axis has always taken on the role of accelerating the convergence of the analog world to the network world. Now we are going to apply that experience in the physical access control segment to open up to IP technology," says Alessandra Faria, Axis Director for South America.
Axis A1001 door controller was initially released in the United States in 2013 and, last year, in Europe. The size of the global physical access control market is approximately US$3 billion (2012) and will reach US$4.2 billion in 2017, representing an annual growth of 7%, according to market analysis firm IHS*.
"Beyond now entering the physical access control market, our focus will continue on network video products. We expect sales in physical access control to represent a small but important part of our business," said Ray Mauritsson, President and CEO of Axis Communications.
Innovative technology - With web-based access management software, AXIS A1001 is a ready-made solution for small and medium-sized businesses, such as offices, factories and stores, with approximately 10 doors and basic access control requirements.
AXIS A1001 is open to third-party software, allowing the unit to be integrated into solutions provided by Axis Partners. This open API enables video integration, intrusion detection, and other systems. The solution can be complemented with standard IT equipment, readers, door locks and door position sensors that meet the needs of the facility.
The controller was designed for wall and ceiling mounting. The use of Power over Ethernet technology reduces the need to use separate cables to power door accessories and proprietary data cables. Thanks to upS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) support, power can be maintained in the event of a power outage, eliminating the need for backup batteries at each door.
AXIS A1001 IP Door Controller will be available in South America in the second half of 2015.
