. BitDefender, a provider of security solutions discovered a new deceptive application that is distributed through Facebook and that takes advantage of the interest of people looking to get an invitation to Google+, the new social network of the renowned search engine.
The application is called 'Google Plus Direct Access' and assures users an invitation to Google+, however, after entering that page on Facebook and clicking "like", instead of granting the desired invitation, it infects the victim with malware and spam.
This new way of spreading a virus managed in less than 24 hours for 15,000 users to click and activate the attack. BitDefender had already published a study in which it said that 25% of Facebook users had malicious content on their wall and that it had been shared by a friend.
"With the press coverage of the launch of Google+ and its rapid growth, an invitation to this social network is a perfect bait," said Catalin Cosoi, an online threat officer at BitDefender labs.
