Five biometric trends for access control in buildings

Cinco tendencias biométricas para el control de acceso en edificios

International. The landscape of biometric access control for buildings is evolving rapidly, conditioned by technological advances and changing user expectations, Hikvision said.

The manufacturer further indicated that while some aspects of the biometric access market remain constant, such as the importance of privacy protection and the increasing attention to ease of use and efficiency, new trends have emerged that are transforming the way users interact with their environment. Understanding these key trends can help access solution providers and property managers navigate the market more effectively and better serve users.

In this context, Hikvision presented five trends that currently define the application of biometric access control in buildings:

New biometric technologies are applied faster
Market research agency Research And Markets estimates that the global biometric authentication market will reach around $8.8 billion by 2026, with a compound annual growth of 16.3%. Biometric technologies such as iris and palm recognition have advanced significantly and are becoming increasingly applicable in high-security environments. They provide superior security compared to traditional access control systems or pure facial recognition, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized access.

"Since the launch of the MinMoe facial recognition series in 2020, Hikvision has been at the forefront of biometric innovation and now offers more advanced biometric solutions including iris recognition terminal, face and palm recognition terminal to reinforce access control security," says Miguel Arrañaga, Regional Sales Director Bajío at Hikvision Mexico.

Building management systems are increasingly converging
According to the latest report by Meticulous Research, the integrated access control systems market is projected to witness an annual growth rate of 10.1% between 2024 and 2031. In residential properties, access control is being combined with video intercom and security systems, creating seamless user experiences and improving security. In the case of office buildings, integrating access control with elevator systems, advertising displays, and time and attendance control systems is increasingly in demand, streamlining operations and providing valuable insights.

Modular designs are becoming popular
Flexibility and cost-effectiveness are increasingly essential when property managers consider implementing new access control solutions or upgrading existing ones. Modern systems often have modular designs, allowing components such as facial recognition to be added or removed,
fingerprint scanning and QR code readers as per needs. This modular approach improves functionality and ensures scalability for businesses.

"Our company is committed to providing practical and cost-effective access control solutions, with the 1T670, 1T673 and 1T681 MinMoe series with a variety of modules, including facial recognition, card, fingerprint, QR code, physical button and sub 1G communication, as well as mobile and palm credential modules to meet various requirements and budgets," comments on the particular Arrañaga.

Growing demand for greater outdoor protection
Biometric access control systems are moving from indoor applications to outdoor environments. For example, office complexes and
Modern industrial parks are installing more and more outdoor access control points. This shift requires robust solutions designed to
withstand various weather and outdoor conditions. Manufacturers are innovating products with durable materials and protective features
to ensure reliable outdoor performance.

Cloud-based deployment gains popularity
Access control solution providers are increasingly focusing on offering diverse deployment methods to meet the unique needs of different businesses. A notable trend is the adoption of cloud-based deployments, which offer significant advantages such as scalability, flexibility, and remote management.

"We provide flexible biometric access control solutions for customers of all sizes, from individual stores to large organizations and chains, as well as deployment management options. Undoubtedly, exciting advances in biometric access control are transforming the security landscape. As technology evolves, these solutions become increasingly convenient and secure."
