Security strengthened at Brazilian port terminal

Fortalecen la seguridad

Brazil. The Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP) terminal at the Port of Santos, in São Paulo, updated its video surveillance system to improve security and comply with the country's current port legislation.

BTP is the largest port responsible for the control and handling of cargo and containers in Brazil. The terminal has an annual handling capacity of 1.5 million TEUs (standard unit of measurement for a 20-foot container), covering more than 430,000 square meters.

After the recent update, the site is protected with 460 high-resolution cameras of the Axis brand, thanks to which it complies with COANA Ordinance number 80.

According to BTP, the new regulations require 24/7 video surveillance, regardless of weather or atmospheric conditions, as well as keeping the images obtained by video surveillance systems for 180 days

This new landscape led BTP to implement multi-directional, thermal, and bi-spectral cameras provided by Axis. In this way, the monitoring of container handling areas, the control of vessels in operation and the detection of intrusions at the perimeter were optimized.

In this regard, Fábio Carvalho, Security Manager of Brasil Terminal Portuário, commented that "we have managed to eliminate deficiencies and see an area four times larger, which greatly improves the project and the cost-benefit ratio in terms of infrastructure".

In addition, the initiative saved a significant amount of resources by avoiding the construction of a new data center to increase data storage power.

"Every three years we renew our video surveillance system by 30%, but before we buy we go to the market to see what is available in terms of upgrades. This last transition has been very worthwhile, as we have incorporated cameras with excellent technological features, which help us on a day-to-day basis and provide more quality to incident management. In future updates, we can think about standardization", Carvalho concluded.
