International. Axis Communications conducted an experiment with one of its cameras to prove that it could withstand all kinds of conditions by freezing it inside the ice of a hockey rink to get an angle never seen before.
Axis engineers, a film crew and ice hockey players collaborated on the experiment, and the images captured push the boundaries of technology traditionally associated with security cameras. The unobtrusive modular camera, typically used in ATMs, on-board vehicles and other small spaces where only a tiny camera can fit, froze inside the ice and allowed a completely different angle of the action unfolding just inches above.
To record these images, a modular system was chosen. AXIS F2135-RE Fisheye Sensor froze in ice along with a cable connecting it to AXIS F9114 Main Unit, responsible for providing power to the camera's sensor and also processing the video coming through the sensor.
"Ice hockey games are recorded by cameras that film all but one angle. We are passionate about pushing our limits and doing it in innovative ways. We wanted to see how far our cameras and systems can go, and that's how the idea of doing this experiment came about", explains Carl-Axel Alm, Concept Engineer at Axis Communications.
The cameras used in the experiment offer up to full HD/1080p at 60 frames per second, with a 185° field of view. In addition, they stand out for their good results in low light and capturing the action in color, even in temperatures as low as -40°.
Carl-Axel Alm continues: "With this project, we have managed to demonstrate the versatility of our product, as well as its strength and image quality. In addition, the experiment opens the door to more tests in the future in also very demanding environments. There are endless possibilities that we can't wait to explore".
