Cali will invest US$5 million to strengthen its video surveillance system

Cali

Colombia. The city of Cali reported that it will make a significant investment to make technological improvements in the entire security camera system, after the contract signed for $ 21 billion Colombian pesos (about US $ 5 million) by the Secretary of Security and Justice.

The mayor's office revealed that the execution of the contract will include a complete preventive and corrective maintenance to the more than 2,000 surveillance cameras distributed throughout the city, as well as to the more than 1,200 viewing points. This comprehensive process will address not only the cameras themselves, but also the entire related infrastructure, covering elements such as anti-scaling crowns, arms and supports, electrical connection, grounding systems, cabinets, wiring, electrical connections, network connections, UPS, switches and camera location adjustment elements, all with the primary objective of ensuring optimal and reliable operation of the entire video surveillance system.

In addition, the implementation of license plate recognition technology (LPR) and artificial intelligence in different strategic points of Cali stands out.

"We are going to acquire the most advanced technology available in the market to have the best possible surveillance system. It is unlikely to provide security for our citizens without adequate technological strengthening. Therefore, we will take the closed circuit television to the highest level, so that it serves as a fundamental tool both for the prosecution and for the prevention and capture of criminals," said the Secretary of Security and Justice, Jimmy Dranguet Rodríguez.

The official also addressed a major challenge in the current surveillance system: fiber optics. Due to vandalism and construction in the city, approximately 40% of the cameras are disconnected due to fiber optic problems. To address this situation, the plan includes fiber optic reinforcement and constant monitoring to prevent future damage.

In addition to the modernization of the existing cameras, new cameras will be installed in the parks being built by the District Administration and in the expansion zone south of the city, such as Bochalema, Hacienda Kachipay and Ciudad Pacifica. A tour of LPR cameras will also be implemented in the main avenues and routes where there has been an increase in criminal activity.

This modernization plan is based on information gathered by police intelligence, the Technical Investigation Group CTI of the prosecutor's office and the District Security Observatory. It seeks to integrate a state-of-the-art video surveillance system that serves the public force to exercise effective control of the territory and provide greater security to citizens.

The resources allocated to the execution of this project come from allocations to the agency and from the participatory budget of the various communes of the Special District.
