ONVIF celebrates twice

ONVIF

International. ONVIF It announced two new milestones in its history by surpassing 25,000 compliant products and celebrating 15 years as the de facto industry standard for interoperability, continuing to deepen its influence and impact on the physical security market.

Since its inception in 2008, products that fit ONVIF's profiles have steadily grown in number and scope, starting with core products such as IP cameras, video management software, and network video recording solutions. The current database of compliant products now includes intercoms, license plate recognition cameras and may also include drones and services such as video surveillance as a service (VSaaS), a reflection of both the growing value of video and the advantages of using cloud solutions. The list of compliant products is available in onvif.org.

"ONVIF has accomplished a lot in its first 15 years, but our work is certainly not done yet," said Leo Levit, chair of the ONVIF Steering Committee. "As the industry continues to embrace video, AI, cloud and IoT analytics, ONVIF's role as a provider of standardized interfaces in these domains will only become more relevant."

Supporting the industry in these key areas of video analytics and integration with IoT systems is the ONVIF Profile M specification, which standardizes the handling of metadata and analytics events. With the profile, system integrators and end users can more easily manage the exchange of metadata between system components from different manufacturers, such as cameras, video management systems and other software platforms. Profile M also provides support for IoT systems with support for JSON-formatted events over MQTT, a common protocol for IoT applications.

In total, ONVIF offers seven profiles, including Profile S for video streaming; Profile G for video recording and storage; Profile C for physical access control; Profile A for broader access control configuration; Profile T for advanced video streaming, Profile D for access control peripherals, and Profile M for metadata and events for analytics applications.

Products that fit these profiles are produced solely by ONVIF member companies and must support at least one ONVIF profile, but may support multiple profiles for additional functionality. Products must be registered on the ONVIF list of compliant products to be considered as such.
