International. Hanwha Techwin's Wisenet solution was put into operation at Rize-Artvin Airport, located off the coast of Rize province in northeastern Turkey.
This commercial airport mainly serves Turkish Airlines, AnadoluJet and Pegasus Airlines. The airport was built on land reclaimed from the Black Sea. It is expected to serve around two million passengers a year when travel returns to pre-pandemic levels.
Protection of buildings, runway and people
As a completely new airport, the General Directorate of the State Airports Authority (DHMI) was to install a video surveillance system that would ensure the security of the airport itself, protect staff and passengers, and monitor all assets, vehicles, equipment and aircraft. The surveillance system also had to be flexible enough to grow as the airport evolved.
Mubin Cakmak, CEO of systems integrator Bes Teknoloji, said: "The safety of passengers and staff is vital to the airport experience. That said, the security team at Rize-Artvin Airport wanted to install a complete and reliable video surveillance solution that would also work perfectly with access control, perimeter protection and the announcement system."
Why Wisenet was chosen
The airport building covers an area of 4,460 square meters with a runway 3,000 meters long. As with all airports, the scale and range of the different areas to be protected increase the complexity of the surveillance required. Not only does the airport security team need to monitor any suspicious behavior or illegal entry, but they also need to be aware of unattended or abandoned baggage, vandalism and equipment tampering, missing children, and theft or other crimes.
Wisenet cameras were chosen for their additional analytical capabilities, including directional detection, virtual line, manipulation functions, appearance/disappearance and input/output. This offers operators greater contextual awareness of everything that happens on the site. With Wisenet, the airport has acquired a complete security system, with access control, emergency warnings, public announcements and fire detection, all integrated with video.

As Cakmak commented, "Advanced analytics is increasingly important to security teams today as a way to aggregate context insights to improve responses, proactively manage security, and respond to events quickly. Alerts are sent to operators according to pre-established rules, so they can be sure that the system is being continuously monitored against any threats, while other tasks continue to be carried out."
Variety of cameras installed
In total, 710 Wisenet cameras were installed, including TNO-4050T thermal cameras for perimeter and runway security, XNV-6080R minidomes inside and outside the airport, XNO-6080R bullet cameras inside the airport car park and XNP-6321H PTZ domes inside the terminal building.
The cameras work with Milestone's XProtect VMS and are integrated with the airport's access control and fire alarm systems.
The main control room receives video and other data streams 24/7, with additional access to the surveillance system via monitors installed inside the airport building, allowing security equipment to view video footage without having to return to the control room.
A multi-level security system was created that, starting outside the airport, requires security checks at every crossing point, runway, elevators and counters. This system, together with line crossing analysis (which detects possible intrusions through cameras installed around the runway) improves flight safety by preventing unauthorized access to the runway. This is complemented by thermal cameras that detect people moving around the track in low-light conditions.
The system has a 5-year warranty, as integrator Bes Teknoloji is a STEP partner of Hanwha Techwin. The installation took place over 16 months, starting in February 2021 and ending in June 2022.
