U.S. Border U.S.-Mexico Features Access Control and Facial Recognition Technology

SAFR - RealNetworksUSA / Mexico. Cross Border Xpress (CBX): an unprecedented border crossing that relies on RealNetworks SAFR to bring analytical data from the crossing process between Mexico and the United States (and vice versa).

U.S.-Mexico Border
With 3,141 kilometers of extension, the international border between the United States and Mexico passes through 23 municipalities in the United States and 39 municipalities in Mexico. It is the most frequently crossed border in the world with approximately 350 million documented crossings annually.

CBX (Cross Border Xpress)
Cross Border Xpress is a 120-meter-long walkway that departs from the Tijuana airport in Mexico and arrives at a passenger terminal in the North American city of San Diego.

With an investment of more than US$120 million, the governments of the two countries authorized the construction of the binational bridge with the aim of facilitating the transit of passengers between the two cities.

The gateway, which began operating on December 9, 2015, operates 24 hours a day and has an immigration area, duty free, exchange house and food place, being considered an attractive option especially for those who need to cross the border constantly.

Objective
The border has a high rate of documented and undocumented immigration crossings each year. With such a high volume of people crossing annually, it was decided to adopt SAFR technology to efficiently count the number of passengers crossing and the time it takes on the route.

To this end, the cameras were installed at strategic points of interaction on the passenger's path, as shown in the following examples:

Results
With the implementation of SAFR in CBX it is possible to generate reports of the average crossing time, the profile of the public passing through the bridge, in addition to sending alerts and notifications when one of the pre-established metrics is exceeded.

Therefore, with data generated in real time, it is possible to identify problems, interruptions, errors and inconsistencies, being able to plan corrections immediately and transform the data into insights for continuous improvements in the border crossing process.

"We are very satisfied with the performance, the specific reporting functionalities and the support that the SAFR team offers, providing the necessary knowledge that is required to carry out an operation as important as CBX," said Julio Armentariz, CTO of CBX.

See below for the illustration that represents the analysis of the crossing time and what are the reports generated by SAFR:

"We are very proud to assist CBX in its day-to-day operations by contributing to greater efficiency and travel quality for the thousands of passengers who frequent the terminal every day," said José Larrucea, Senior Vice President of International Sales at RealNetworks.

"We see optimal potential in RealNetworks' technology and are looking to expand its use in other areas within CBX in order to further increase the efficiency of operations," added Armentariz.

Applied Solutions
SAFR ™ is the global computer vision platform for live video. Based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, the solution was designed to detect, compare and identify millions of faces in real time, with high accuracy and performance, even in difficult conditions. The SAFR has been applied in projects of smart cities, transport, health, industry, education, airports, contributing to increase safety, the efficiency of processes and the creation of indicators for rapid decision making.

According to the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), SAFR performance reaches an accuracy of 99.9% at a speed of less than 50 milliseconds. In addition, NIST measurements show that SAFR is the lightest model that provides significant gains in terms of investment in hardware infrastructure for large-scale projects.
