Idemia wins contract for generation of identity documents in Chile

Idemia

Chile. A new contract that includes identity and travel documents, the identification system and related services by the Identification and Civil Registry Service of Chile for a period of 10 years, has been awarded to the company Idemia.

The new generation of identity documents will incorporate multibiometry: fingerprints, face and iris. Identity documents will meet a higher level of security standards, making the Chilean passport one of the most secure travel documents in the world. The contract will also include a digital ID that will allow local citizens to securely access online services.

The new contract includes an update of identity documents and the provision of a digital ID for all Chilean citizens. Identity documents now meet high security standards, including cryptographic technologies. For the first time, Chilean identity documents will include iris biometrics in addition to face biometrics and fingerprints.

Digital identification (in accordance with ISO and ICAO standards) enables secure access to online public and private sector facilities, e.g. transport booking and telemedicine services. In addition, Chilean citizens will be able to securely share identification attributes online for remote identity verification.

An average of 320,000 passports will be produced per year, in addition to 4.8 million identity documents.

Idemia's solution allows visually impaired people to use the ID card and passport through an app that uses voice assistance to reproduce the data. The company also offers identity documents and passports containing the citizen's initials in Braille.

"We are proud to continue our long-term partnership with Chile by providing one of the strongest and most globally recognized identification solutions on the market. With this new generation of secure identity documents based on multibiometry and cryptography, we provide a comprehensive solution that meets the strict requirements of the Chilean authorities, enabling the digital transformation of the country," said Matthew Cole, Executive Vice President of Identity and Public Security at Idemia.

Idemia has been present in Chile since 2012 and has issued more than 3.37 million passports and 29 million identity cards, with average delivery times of less than 24 hours. Idemia's long-standing collaboration with the Civil Registry and Identification Service has resulted in Chile's passport ranking 16th in the world, allowing visa-free entry to 174 countries and an exclusive visa waiver for the United States1.

Additional information on identity documents and solution offered
Particular attention was paid to the design of the passport and ID card to reflect the unique character of the world's longest country (from north to south).

The development of the solution for Chile's identification program is based on the latest developments in Idemia's innovative automated biometric identification system, the Biometric Recognition System (IBRS) that ensures that every citizen receives a strong and unique legal identification that is valid throughout their lives. it also includes specific components (MBIS) for interconnection with National Security Agencies.
