High security project in Colombian port

Proyecto de alta seguridad en puerto colombiano

Colombia. In Puerto Bahia, the most modern port terminal in this country, a high security solution from Johnson Controls was recently installed.

The port, located in the heart of the bay of Cartagena and with only six years of operations, has become a benchmark in technology and resource optimization, thanks to the fact that it has the first fully automated bulk liquid handling dock in the country and hydrocarbon storage capacity of almost 2.7 million barrels.

These characteristics, added to the high flow of personnel from employees, contractors and visitors, made the port require an access, monitoring and video surveillance solution of the highest standards worldwide.

The first step for Puerto Bahia was to implement the C•CURE 9000 event management and access control system to facilitate the management of the entry of employees, contractors and visitors. This scalable solution supports up to 5,000 readers per server and 500,000 cardholders for access control. In addition, as the system offers video visualization and dynamic reports on system activity, alarms and visits, it allowed to centralize the management of security operations.

With C•CURE 9000, you can leverage mapping functionality and dynamic view to gain critical information and improve response time to security-related incidents.

In order to perform visual monitoring of the facilities, Puerto Bahia implemented 136 Illustra Flex cameras. IP cameras were placed all over the interior of the facility and in the outdoor areas in order to capture high-quality images both during the day and at night. In this way, the terminal can take advantage of features such as high-definition imaging and built-in anti-sabotage detection, which quickly identify a locked lens or bright light. Day/Night mode allows you to record high-quality video in low-light conditions.

Each camera is monitored in real time through the exacqVision video management system (VMS), a scalable, intuitive and easy-to-use solution. Thanks to this system, port security personnel can point to important recordings so they can view them another day or perform a quick search for anomalies in the video.

Artificial Intelligence to strengthen security
Based on the latest technological advances, Puerto Bahia also incorporated Tyco Radar, the first implementation of its kind in Colombia, in which an integrated system of ground radars has automatic cameras that track intruders. With eleven radars in total, the Tyco Radar system provides complete coverage of the entire perimeter of the Maritime Terminal.

"During the design process of the solution, we incorporated the artificial intelligence platform into Tyco Radar, along with the integration of exacqVision, to be able to classify the objects of the video in real time and identify possible false alarms," said Mónica Prieto, Business Development Manager of Johnson Controls in Latin America North and the Andean Region.

The executive also stressed that the deep learning engine provides greater effectiveness in the perimeter protection of Puerto Bahia, since it allows operators to assess the risk with respect to what is being tracked through the Tyco Radar system, such as cars, motorcycles, people or animals. "When that happens, the system automatically tracks the intrusion using the PTZ function of illustra cameras," Prieto added.

Reduction of operating costs
The development implemented in the port made it visible that digital transformation is not synonymous with huge investments that cannot be recovered. "We invested in state-of-the-art technology and, thanks to this, we immediately reduced security costs by 30 percent," said Alejandro David Sejnaui, Director of Technology and Processes at Puerto Bahia.

As part of its Digital Transformation strategy 'DigiPort', the company is implementing new automation and innovation projects based on 4.0 technologies such as Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence that will allow it to be a benchmark for port security for all of Latin America.
