ONVIF Introduces Profile M Release Candidate for Metadata and Analytics for Intelligent Applications

ONVIFLatin America. ONVIF has presented the Release Candidate for Profile M. This draft specification standardizes metadata communication and analysis event handling for intelligent applications.

The brand ensures that this novelty paves the way for greater interoperability of IP cameras or analysis applications with video management systems and easier integration with IoT (Internet of Things) systems.

Profile M provides a standard way to communicate metadata between devices or edge services, such as IP cameras or analytics applications for devices and clients, such as video management software (VMS), network video recorders, or server- or cloud-based services. This means that system integrators and end users can flexibly mix and match solutions from different analytics providers, edge devices, and video management software or cloud services, along with IoT applications, into a single system.

"Profile M will be a compelling ONVIF profile for camera and VMS providers, and independent developers of cloud-based, server- or edge-based services," said Sriram Bhetanabottla, chair of ONVIF's Profile M working group. "The increase in the number of intelligent applications for security, business intelligence and IoT devices is driving the demands for interoperability. Profile M applications will have broad compatibility, and this will encourage further growth in the number and types of applications and result in an even greater choice for end users."

The ONVIF Profile M release candidate supports the configuration of analysis and query of information for metadata, as well as the filtering and transmission of metadata. It has interfaces for classification of generic objects and metadata specified for geolocation, vehicle, license plate, human face and human body. Profile M also defines interfaces for configuring rules for events, handling events for applications that support people counting and face and license plate recognition, and events that use JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol for IoT applications.

Metadata use cases include highlighting objects of interest in a video stream, heat maps in a retail store using human and geolocation metadata, and vehicle mapping in a parking lot using vehicle metadata and geolocation. Use cases for Profile M's event management interfaces include crowd control or queue management through people count analysis and access control in a parking lot through license plate recognition applications. For an IoT application, the Profile M event handling interface can be used, for example, for room temperature control, where a Profile M camera (with MQTT support) detects humans in a room and sends an ONVIF event via MQTT to an IoT platform or application that, in turn, activate a smart thermostat to adjust the ambient temperature.

Profile M can be combined with other ONVIF access control and video profiles for an integrated system based on ONVIF interfaces.
