Mexico. In Newmont's polymetallic mine located in the northeast of the country, it was necessary to promote employee authentication, which is why HID Global collaborated with Alutel Mobility to promote this initiative.
HID Omnikey smart card readers, Seos credentials, Alutel Mobility's solution with Ragtab tablets and Alutel's mobile app, allowed Newmont to protect and monitor multiple entry points and verify car access in rural and underground mines, sites where it is almost impossible to install readers and where there is no internet connectivity.
"With the help of HID Global and Alutel Mobility, Newmont was able to establish an innovative access control system designed to exceed our specific needs," said Daniel Tejada, Newmont project manager. "Before, there was no control over who was on site, so we've gone from having no control at all to having full control."
How does it work?
• Workers simply pass their Seos credentials over a Ragtab tablet, which features a built-in HID Omnikey reader.
• The Alutel Mobility app displays the employee's data and photo for better visual verification and connects with Newmont's access control platform for authentication.
• The tablet displays a signal on the screen to determine whether the user can enter or not.
• If there is no internet connectivity, the mobile device saves the collected data and verifies it once the connection resumes.
Alutel Mobility's employee verification solution is now fully operational at the Peñasquito plant located in Zacatecas (Mexico). This project is part of an internal digital transformation initiative being executed by Newmont. Since implementation, the company processes more than 100,000 authentication events per month with HID smart cards and mobile IDs.

This partnership between HID, Alutel Mobility and Newmont has laid the groundwork for the company to examine future use cases to optimize processes such as food distribution. "This will significantly improve the way we deliver food boxes to our workers, and there are many other possible functions that we must take into account to take advantage of the benefits of this system, in a way that allows us to increase the safety and efficiency of our organization," concluded Tejeda.
