International. The Devon House at St. Katharine Docks, an office building on the east side of London, installed a unique TQM manual revolving door at the main entrance, plus two sets of Boon Edam Speedlane Swing optical turnstiles to increase lobby security.
Devon House features more than 48,000 square feet of office space, as well as a dedicated on-site cafeteria, a collaborative work space center, a riverside patio, and 97 bike spaces. The building is surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars, and has direct transport links nearby.
Creating a new reception space
In the spring of 2019, a complete renovation, both internal and external, was completed, including a new reception space. The new lobby is now an open social space, echoing the laid-back atmosphere of a café while enjoying the sweeping views of the riverbank. It also serves as a collaborative workspace center equipped with several tables and chairs to make them easily accessible to both employees and visitors.
Updating the main entrance with a unique revolving door
The renowned architect working on the Devon House project, Stiff and Trevillion, specified a manual revolving door for the main entrance, but requested a special design: they decided to join the features of two doors – the TQM door and the Crystal TQ glass door from Boon Edam. The side walls and door wings would be framed in metal with aluminum, but there would be no metal awning: just an 18mm thick glass roof, thin and transparent, allowing light to flow through the entrance unobstructed.
Improving physical security with user flow in mind
Devon House designers decided on optical turnstiles to control access in the lobby and deter tracking attempts. They allowed the building's capacity to dictate the number of lanes that would be needed, using a calculation that considered both total capacity and traffic changes during peak daylight hours, such as morning and afternoon commutes, and bidirectional traffic during lunchtime. In addition, wide lanes were placed on either side of the reception desk to accommodate wheelchair access. Once the quantity was decided, the focus was on the design. The Speedlane Swing optical turnstiles were chosen for their slim cabinet design and oscillating, custom barriers with a black powder paint finish to match the lobby décor.
Today the building is fully operational and Boon Edam looks forward to working with Stiff & Trevellion on future projects.
