Latin America. Seagate Technology announced the addition of a new feature called SkyHawk RAID RapidRebuild to SkyHawk Health Management (SHM) drive management software, which makes it easy to extract information on a failed drive before attempting to perform RAID system recovery; in order to save time and avoid mistakes.
As has been proven, there are great benefits to using hard drives specially designed for video surveillance, for example, if compared to standard 3.5-inch drives for desktop PCs, SkyHawk surveillance-optimized hard drives offer superior performance and reliability, up to 3 times the workload index, which makes them ideal for harsh surveillance environments and more cameras.
In addition, to prevent any disk failure, users have SkyHawk Health Management (SHM), drive management software designed for prevention, intervention and recovery. SHM helps users manage the state of their systems' hard drives; analyzes the parameters of the unit and uses proprietary algorithms to determine any problems. With information on operational and environmental conditions, SHM recommends preventive measures and possible interventions depending on the current health of the disk, as well as providing access to data recovery services in case a catastrophic event causes damage to the drive. It's a key difference that only Seagate provides.
Security IT architects choose RAID storage for their surveillance data to ensure greater protection, however, when drive failures occur, RAID rebuilds are usually long and data access is unpredictable. If data is critical, this lengthy RAID recovery can significantly impact business operations.
SkyHawk RAID RapidRebuild is a new feature that is included as part of SHM. This unique Seagate technology provides a partially failed copy feature, which helps quickly extract the maximum amount of data that is still intact from a failed drive, before beginning a RAID recovery.
This significantly reduces the time required to perform volume reconstructions. It rebuilds only the failed fragmented data, then copies over the rest of the unaffected fragmented data to a spare hard drive.
Simply put, the more data that can be extracted directly from a damaged disk, the less data needs to be recovered during a time-consuming and error-prone traditional RAID recovery.
As a result, SHM's SkyHawk RAID RapidRebuild can cause a RAID to rebuild up to 3x faster.
