Sony develops two new 4k image sensors for security cameras

International. Sony Corporation developed two new models of CMOS image sensors: the stacked CMOS image sensor with 4K IMX415 resolution type 1 / 2.8 4K, which is the smallest of its kind in the world; and the backlit CMOS image sensor with 4K IMX485 type 1/1.2 resolution, which offers outstanding low-light performance about 3.3 times higher than conventional.

Sony has designed these two new security camera sensors for the growing smart city market and to meet the growing need for security cameras in a variety of monitoring applications, such as anti-theft systems, disaster alerts and traffic monitoring systems or commercial complexes.

There is a growing demand for security cameras for use in a variety of locations, and with that comes an increased demand for compact cameras that can be installed almost anywhere and have a higher level of image recognition and detection performance. In the future, significant growth in the demand for cameras for image recognition in anomaly detection and behavioral analysis with AI is also expected.

To meet this need, Sony offers a line of compact 4K resolution CMOS image sensors that offer superior image recognition and detection performance and excellent low-light performance at the same time, which had been difficult to achieve with conventional technologies. The expanded line of sensors allows high-quality images to be obtained for various scenes, thus expanding the range of applications for security cameras.

In general, as pixel miniaturization progresses, the light collection efficiency per pixel deteriorates and the sensitivity decreases. Sony's new IMX415 stacked CMOS image sensor employs patented high-sensitivity, low-noise technology to miniaturize the pixel size to 1.45 squareμm, which is about 80% smaller than conventional. The result is the world's smallest 1/2.8 type stacked CMOS image sensor with the smallest 4K resolution but superior low-light performance.

Sony is also launching the IMX485, a backlit CMOS image sensor with even better low-light performance. Employing the latest pixel technology for low-noise capabilities, this sensor achieves outstanding low-light performance 3.3 times greater than the conventional than 2 for a 4K resolution sensor. This enables superior image recognition and detection performance even in dark environments, making it an optimal solution for high-end 4K security cameras.

Sony expects these newly developed CMOS image sensors to be used for a variety of applications, and that this, in turn, will promote the adoption of 4K security cameras, thus contributing to the expansion of the market.
