U.S., China Avoid Rupture After Tariff Hike

International. U.S. and Chinese officials concluded high-level trade negotiations last Friday, May 10, without a deal, but avoiding a breakdown in negotiations even after President Donald Trump raised tariffs on $200 billion in goods from China and threatened to impose more.

Trump described the two days of talks as "sincere and constructive" and said negotiations will continue "in the future."

"Meanwhile, the United States has imposed tariffs on China, which may or may not be removed depending on what happens regarding future negotiations!" Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday.

The United States gave its stock sheet during talks in Washington, saying Beijing had three or four more weeks to reach a deal before the Trump administration enacts additional tariffs on $325 billion of Chinese imports that are not currently covered by punitive rights, according to two people familiar with the talks.

China, for its part, responded to the United States by announcing that it will impose reciprocal measures ranging from 5% to 25%, will be applied on more than 5,000 products and will reach US $ 60,000 million. China's measure will take effect from June 1.
