ONVIF Convenes Developers for Advanced Video Streaming Challenge

International. ONVIF, the global standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, announced the ONVIF Open Source Spotlight Challenge, a technology competency to develop open source applications for innovative IP video streaming solutions to help solve global security issues.

The two-month online challenge, offered in conjunction with BeMyApp, offers hefty cash prizes for developers who use the protocol provided by ONVIF to create open-source mobile or desktop applications for advanced video streaming that provide easy and secure authentication from all platforms. Developers will connect to prototypes of online cameras with T-profile functionality from Axis Communications, Bosch Security Systems, Dahua Technology, Hikvision and Uniview for the challenge.

"As the need for interoperability grows significantly in other industries, it is more important than ever to seek innovative physical security solutions to ensure we deliver that interoperability with the highest levels of efficiency, security and reliability," explains ONVIF Steering Committee Chair Per Björkdahl. "We're excited to see the novel ideas that the larger tech community will offer."

Through a series of video tutorials, participants will learn how to create an application using C# on Windows, iOS on Apple, Java on Android or JavaScript in the browser that connects to an IP camera. Once a developer presents a mobile or desktop app with an innovative security solution, they can earn instant rewards, as well as the chance to compete for big cash prizes from a $20,000  prize pool.

The selection will be based on innovation, feasibility of implementation, functionality, and whether the app is easy to navigate and use. The competition will be open to participants from March 26 and closes on June 3, with winners also announced at the end of June.

Founded in 2008, ONVIF is a leading and widely recognized industry forum that drives interoperability of IP-based physical security products. The organization has a global membership base comprised of established camera companies, video management and access control systems, and nearly 8,000 products compatible with their profiles. With Profile S for video streaming; Profile G for registration and storage; Profile C for physical access control; Profile Q for enhanced functionality; Profile A for greater access to control configurations and the candidate version of the new Profile T for advanced streaming, ONVIF continues to work with its members to expand the number of IP interoperability solutions that ONVIF's compatible products can provide.
