The Superintendency of Surveillance and Private Security is a national and technical body attached to the Ministry of National Defence. It has administrative and financial autonomy, and is responsible for exercising control, inspection and surveillance over the industry and private surveillance and security services.
In 2016, we assumed the commitment to work hand in hand with our stakeholders with the aim of contributing to the economic, social and environmental development of the country through adherence to the United Nations Global Compact. With this accession, we committed to align our strategies and operations with the ten universally accepted principles on issues of human rights, labor practices, the environment and the fight against corruption.
This commitment had to materialize through the implementation of actions or activities whose objective was to generate changes not only in our internal culture, but in the business culture of the sector, and, in turn, contribute to the sustainable development of society.
One of the most significant advances in the management made over these two years has been the fight against climate change. For this we have been developing activities, trainings and campaigns whose objective is to raise awareness among our stakeholders of the importance and need to mitigate the environmental impact associated with the development of our actions. In the case of Supervigilance, and with the aim of complying with our Institutional Social Responsibility Policy, we carried out during 2017 the measurement of our carbon footprint in order to establish effective measures to reduce our emissions.
The carbon footprint is an indicator that measures the impact that the activities of people and companies/entities have on global warming. It can be understood as the mark that each activity leaves on the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions . The calculation we made was based on the methodological guidelines and tools of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol).
The result of the measurement of our carbon footprint showed an absolute emission of 69.32 tons of CO2 equivalent for the period 2017.
In order to neutralize these emissions, we carried out together with our servers and contractors activities of prevention, reduction and compensation of the carbon footprint. Initially, we established awareness and communication measures for the dissemination of the results obtained in the calculation of the footprint in order to generate awareness about the importance of the care and preservation of the environment. Likewise, through different campaigns, we seek to encourage the use of sustainable means of transport such as cycling, and the promotion of public transport and other transport mechanisms that are clean with the environment.
On the other hand, we develop an activity of integration and ecological restoration (planting of trees) in the Chicaque Natural Park. Public servants and contractors participated in an ecological walk along the park's trails, where the space was used to raise awareness about how to reduce the negative impact we have on the planet. In total, 80 trees were planted that will allow the creation of biological corridors to protect fauna, flora and water.
Our environmental sustainability strategy is aimed at continuous improvement, seeking the prevention, mitigation and compensation of the impacts generated to the environment under sustainability criteria.
