Facial recognition reduces incidents at bus stations

International. Madrid's South Bus Station, the busiest in Europe, reduced the number of incidents from 5 daily to 5 a month following the adoption of facial recognition technology. The experience opens up opportunities to bolster passenger safety at other stations through advanced video analytics.

The result was achieved with the use of video surveillance cameras from Axis Communications, a global leader in network video, and Herta Security's BioSurveillance NEXT software, designed for the immediate identification of subjects in highly frequented and moving environments.

With the image quality of the cameras, which have Full HD resolution, the facial recognition system responds correctly to partial concealment of the face,  changes  in facial expression and moderate rotations of the face, reaching a level of accuracy greater than 99%.

The incorporation of this facial  recognition system and the collaboration with the State Security Bodies, through the exchange of information from their databases, have managed to increase the feeling of security among users. The system is also prepared for any type of  emergency that involves more complex actions.

"The excellent capacity of the Axis Communications cameras installed to adapt to highly changing light environments has been fundamental when it comes to improving the video surveillance system and putting into operation the facial recognition of the station," explains  Miguel Ángel Gallego, Director of Security of the South Bus Station of Madrid.

AXIS Q3505-V and AXIS P1365 feature unique features such as 60 frames per second, aisle format  (for displaying images vertically instead of horizontal display) and color fidelity. Its biggest differentiator has been the Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology with Forensic Capture, which makes an instant compensation of the variations of light in the scene to clearly show everything that happens in it.
