Uruguay. The mayor of the CH Municipality, Andrés Abt, met with Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi to consider his willingness to coordinate actions with the ministry to improve security in the Pocitos, Parque Batlle, Tres Cruces, La Blanqueada, Villa Dolores, Buceo and Punta Carretas neighborhoods.
"During the campaign we insisted that the security issue was one of the most important, even though it is not something that corresponds directly to the municipalities or the Intendancy," Abt told Montevideo Portal, after the meeting. Although it is outside his competence, the mayor considered that "actions can be articulated together."
The exchange between the mayor of the Concertación and Bonomi covered the contribution to the security policy that can mean improvements in lighting, the placement of security cameras, address the situation of abandoned homes in the Municipality and improve the presence in the "hot spots" of crime.
Abt proposed to Bonomi to be the "nexus" between the Ministry and merchants in the area who intend to organize to finance the purchase of cameras. To that end, an area of dialogue between the two agencies will begin to operate in the coming weeks, with "two or three" representatives of the Ministry of the Interior.
The mayor considered that the CH Municipality does not have a particular problem of insecurity but that this concern includes "all of Montevideo". In that sense, he valued the experiences achieved with security cameras in the Old City or Paso Molino.
