Mexico. In the last three years, the Municipal Police of Saltillo has gone from having 210 to only 120 elements of Traffic and Roads. The director of the corporation, Clemente Yáñez Carrillo, announced that the inclusion of technology has caused these personnel movements and added that currently the Police is composed of 720 elements between operational and Transit.
Yáñez Carrillo said that the figure is well below his expectations, because the ideal would be to have 800 police officers per shift, that is, two thousand 400 in total.
"There are not enough police, if we manage in terms of standards of one policeman per thousand inhabitants or 2 or 3, we do not arrive," he said.
The official announced that when he assumed his position at the head of the Municipal Police there were 210 elements of Transit and currently there are only 110. He pointed out that this decrease is due to the inclusion of technology with 390 surveillance cameras that are distributed throughout the city, despite the fact that Yáñez assures that the municipality needs about seven thousand.
"Investing in 300 police officers costs you more than 70 million pesos, it is very expensive, we depend on the resource of the municipality. You have to bet on technology because maybe a camera gives you the work of two or three policemen," he added.
Finally, the police chief announced that before the end of 2015 the corporation must have at least a thousand elements and by the end of the administration, in two more years, with one thousand 400, although he assured that technology will continue to be part.
