Colombia. Volunteer firefighters from Cali learned at the Garray heliport in Soria, Spain, how thermal cameras allow fire outbreaks to be located in order to respond quickly and adequately to situations, even in isolated and remote environments or with adverse environmental conditions.
The system that began to be installed in 2006 by the regional government, allowed in 2012 four fires so far this year and has monitored another 31 fires, some of them in neighboring provinces.
19 thermal cameras cover an area of about 380,000 hectares. They help prevent forest fires and also facilitate extinguishing tasks thanks to the thermographic and real-time monitoring of the foci, as well as the precise location on the available cartography of the area.
