Colombia. About 80% of the voters in the elections for governor of the department of Valle, next Sunday, will be identified through biometric technology.
In this sense, the National Registry calculated that 2,538,867 of the 3,139,172 citizens who make up the electoral roll in this department will be able to be identified with biometric tools to avoid fraud as common as the impersonation of voters.
To this end, the Registry will install 1,702 biometric stations in 16 of the 42 municipalities of Valle del Cauca: Cali, Buenaventura, Buga, Caicedonia, Candelaria, Cartago, El Cerrito, Florida, Jamundí, La Unión, Palmira, Pradera, Sevilla, Tuluá, Yumbo and Zarzal.
These municipalities were chosen for the implementation of biometric technology taking into account the electoral risk maps that have been designed with information from the latest electoral processes in the region.
The National Registrar, Carlos Ariel Sánchez, indicated that to ensure the transparency of this electoral process, in addition to biometrics, a series of measures have been implemented such as the audit carried out on the jury databases, which was crossed against the National Identification Archive and the Electoral Census; the transfer of electoral officials; verification of lists of citizens eligible as jurors; updating the electoral roll; the accompaniment of the Public Prosecutor's Office; the digitization and publication of the counting record, Form E-14, among others.
