Mexico. Last May, the perception of public security in the country improved 7.3% compared to the same month in 2011, going from 95.1 to 102 points, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
In a statement, he said that the advance in the Public Security Perception Index (IPSP) last May was derived from the increases observed in all its components.
The IPSP is constructed from five partial indicators: two of them are based on the perception of current and expected personal security within a year; two others consider the opinion on the current situation of public security in the country and that expected a year from now.
While the fifth indicator reflects the degree of confidence that the interviewee has when walking alone between 4:00 and 7:00 in the afternoon (local time) along the course where he lives.
Thus, he explained, that last May, the indicator on the perception of current personal security compared to that of 12 months ago was 101.8 points, a level 9.8% higher than that reported in the same month of 2011, when it stood at 92.8 points.
The partial indicator that compares the situation of personal security expected within 12 months with respect to the current one, stood at 103.5 points in the fifth month of 2012, which was higher than the 98.8 points of the same month a year earlier, which implied an increase of 4.7%
The component of the IPSP related to the perception of public security in Mexico today compared to that of 12 months ago, reached 104.6 points in May of this year, which meant a growth of 10.5% compared to the 94.7 points registered in the same month of 2011.
The indicator referring to the expectation within 12 months of public security in the country with respect to the current situation was 103.3 points, 8.4% higher than the 95.3 points observed in May last year.
For its part, the component that measures the degree of confidence of people when walking alone on the course where they live between 4:00 and 7:00 in the afternoon, advanced 3.1% in the reference month to be established at 96.6 points, a level that compares with the 93.7 points observed in May 2011.
